History of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams

TTD assumes the vital role of supervising the day-to-day activities at the illustrious Sri Venkateswara Swamy temple, nestled in the city of Tirumala within the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.

The origins of TTD trace back to 1932 when it came into existence through the enactment of the TTD Act of 1932. This historic legislation was promulgated by the Madras Government with the primary aim of managing the temple’s affairs.

By the provisions of this act, the temple’s administration was entrusted to a seven-member committee, closely supervised by a government-appointed commissioner who received a salary for their role.

The temple’s history is believed to date back to the Satya Yuga, the first of the four Yugas or ages in Hinduism. As per the Srimad-Bhagavatam, in the Satya Yuga, there was an event where Hiranyaksha’s harmful deeds led to a situation where the earth sank to the depths of the Garbhodaka ocean.

During this time, the demigods sought the assistance of Lord Brahma, who fervently prayed to Lord Vishnu.

Lord Vishnu appeared before Lord Brahma and instructed him to take the help of a sage named Bhrigu to find a suitable place for his abode on earth. Bhrigu visited different places on earth and finally reached the top of the Tirumala hills.

In that instance, Lord Brahma discovered Lord Vishnu’s presence in the form of Sri Venkateswara Swamy and identified the location as the most appropriate dwelling place for the Lord.

Over the centuries, the temple grew in popularity and became one of India’s wealthiest and most influential religious institutions.

The temple’s administration was handed over to the TTD trust in 1961, and since then, it has been responsible for managing the temple’s affairs, including the online booking of tickets for various services and darshan.
